Roadtrip: Sundance – Animators Know How to Party
After visiting the New Frontier, it was time to party. At the Filmmakers Lounge party we met up with Lorenzo’s friend, David O’Reilly, an Irish/German animator with a short in Sundance called “Please Say Something” and his friends Adrien Merigeau “old fangs” and Bastien Dubois “Madagascar, a journey diary” – both with animation shorts in the festival as well (check out their amazing films at the end of the post). Thanks to these guys we got in the party, only to find we had to pay for alcohol. Sundance making its filmmakers pay for their own alcohol? Absurd! Lucky for us, we had brought our flasks, as well as a bottle of SoCo. The party was a little lame, so Rom stole a poster off the wall for Drunk History: Douglass & Lincoln starring Don Cheadle and Will Ferrell, and David stole some beers. He was caught by a bartender, think Stone Cold Steve Austin’s brother, who almost threw us out. After chatting with a few directors, producers, and composers, none of which were James Franco, Diego Luna, or Spike Jonze (le sigh), we left the lame fest in search of something more stimulating.
Videos after the jump.
Heading back to the New Frontier, which had now turned into a party, we again got access with minimal hassling, thanks to our animating friends. This time, the alcohol flowed, as we were each granted three free drinks. Later, we proceeded to make friends with the humble bartender, increasing the three to three-too-many. They also had a food table with chips and salsa, sembei (Japanese crackers), pretzels, and meatballs. I guess they were assuming drunk people don’t discriminate against weird food combinations. We mingled with the other party-goers, a mash-up of filmmakers, film lovers, musicians, random celebrities, etc. In short, a good crowd. I met Adrian Younge from Adrian Younge & The Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra (see “Music Cafe” post) who tried to pick me up with the line “Hey, are you from L.A.? Your face looks so familiar.” and then later proceeded to touch my eye. Creepy. Rom talked with a girl who was asleep in the Lobe of Lung installation, and had been since we left the New Frontier the first time. I spotted Joseph Gordon Levitt twice before he bolted out of the party, surely headed for a more A-list affair. Lorenzo ogled some Victoria Secret model. David and company, drank. This, more or less, continued for the remainder of the night. I’ll leave it up to you to deduce how the night ended.
