Releases for March 5, 2010

This week, I have three movies to tell you about.  They all involve delving into fantastical lands filled with dangers and mysteries!  What peril awaits you at the cinema this weekend?  There’s something for everyone, so you really have no excuse for staying in.  Unless you have some magical way to enjoy movies from the comfort of your own home.

More after the jump!

Alice in Wonderland
This is not an adaptation of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” or even “Through the Looking-Glass,” but rather an original sequel (sort of like Steven Spielberg’s Hook, I guess).  So right off the bat, I think it’s pretty stupid to call it Alice in Wonderland.  The title should indicate in some way that it’s a fucking sequel.  Also, I’m getting a pretty unsettling Charlie and the Chocolate Factory vibe from it, in that it could just be a big, expensive waste of time directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp.  And I LOVE Tim Burton.  But I think he needs to do more original stuff.  I’m also a little put off by the big heads on some of the characters.  Like, what is that?  What is this movie?  The teaser I saw was all over the place.  I just… I don’t know.  But you can find out in Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D.

Brooklyn’s Finest
This is about three cops in Brooklyn, having a tough go and making difficult decisions and stuff.  The cast includes Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, as well as multiple-MTV Award-nominee and ex-con Wesley Snipes.  It’s also directed by Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua.  This was the first film to sell at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.  Which sounds pretty sweet, but I gotta tell ya, this movie already had me at the poster.

The Secret of Kells
This is that 2010 Academy Award for Best Animated Film nominee you’ve never heard of.  It’s an Irish hand-drawn adventure movie that tells a story of magic, fantasy, and Celtic mythology.  I feel like we haven’t seen one of those in a while.  It looks pretty cool.  Apparently, it’s only coming out in New York, but will see a wider release in the coming weeks.

What are you gonna see this weekend?
